Wind Farms Meet Wheatfields

Wind Farms meet Wheatfields in the Rolling Hills of Central Oregon

Not far from the Old Parkdale Inn Bed and Breakfast, a nice drive I like to share with my guests, is Central Oregon.  Head east on I-84 and the Columbia River Gorge opens up to the rolling high desert wheat fields of the Columbia Basin.  It is stunning, big skies and vast views.  Rock formations left over from the Ice Age Missoula Floods, floods that shaped the landscape and the Columbia River Gorge.  And wind, sometimes gentle but often times strong.  The perfect place for hundreds of wind turbines.  Oregon’s goal:  to capture 20% of our energy needs from the wind.
After visiting the wind farms cross over the Columbia River into Washington and travel west on Hwy 14.  Visit the Maryhill Museum, tour the wineries along the way.  Take a hike at Catherine Creek, observe the Petroglyphs and Pictographs at Horsethief Lake.  Cross back over the mighty Columbia at Bingen, and head back up the Hood River Valley to the Old Parkdale Inn.  An adventurous day trip you’ll sure to enjoy.
