Multnomah Falls is the most visited recreation site in the Pacific Northwest with 2 million stopping each year to take in the views. As a local innkeeper I suggest visiting the falls on either ends of the day and midweek to beat the crowds. I also suggest taking the time to hike the 5.1 mile Wahkeena – Multnomah Falls loop so as to ‘discover’ 6 more waterfalls, if you indeed love to chase waterfalls.
Fed by underground springs from Larch Mountain, the flow over the falls varies, usually its highest during winter and spring. Multnomah Falls offers one of the best places in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area to study geology exposed by floods. Five flows of Yakima basalt are visible in the falls’ cliff face.
Plan your trip to Multnomah Falls (Exit 31 I-84) with a Timed Use Permit
2025 timed tickets have not gone on sale yet.
We recommend you plan your visit to Multnomah Falls by purchasing your permit in advance or visit earlier in the day to avoid the crowds. Starting Memorial Weekend and running through Labor day weekiend a timed use permit will be required to access Multnomah Falls from Exit 31 off of Hwy 84 between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. daily. Timed use permits will not be required on the Historic Columbia River Highway/U.S. 30 in 2025. However, this route is extremely congested in the warmer months and parking is limited at the small lot along the Historic Highway/U.S. 30 at Multnomah Falls.
Multnomah Falls permits will be available On Line Here for a $2 transaction fee per vehicle. A limited number of permits will be available for pickup without a fee at the Gateway to The Gorge Visitor Center in Troutdale and Cascade Locks Historical Museum in Cascade Locks.
Option 2: You might want to consider taking public transportation to the falls.
