Punch Bowl Falls in the Columbia River Gorge

Punch Bowl Falls is one of the most photographed falls in the Columbia River Gorge, maybe even the Pacific Northwest. The fall is located along the Eagle Creek trail in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic area. But you’ll need to get your hiking boots on and trek in about a mile and a half along the Eagle Creek Trail.

Constructed in 1915 with pick axes and shovels, the cliffs have been blasted out so that the trail could bypass several deep canyons. The entire Eagle Creek trail is 14 miles long with a minimum of 6 waterfalls along the way.

Eagle Creek Fire – 2017

The Eagle Creek Fire was started on Sept. 2, 2017 by a firecracker on the Eagle Creek Trail. The fire burned more than 48,000 acres in the Columbia River Gorge, torching forests around popular hiking areas on the Oregon side of the river.

Even in the places that are burned the burn scar is not overwhelming for much of the hike. There is lots of low-intensity fire, often known as “good fire,” where trees might have black scorch marks but the canopy is intact and the forest floor is covered up with ferns, moss or the golden color of big leaf maple.
